Where to watch the Rugby World Cup

If you can’t stand to miss out on one moment of the Rugby World Cup taking place in the UK until 31 October, don’t worry – there lots of places in South Africa where you can catch up on the game.

There will be a number of Absa Boktowns which will be held during each game the Springboks play, including ones at Montecasino and Silverstar Casinos in Johannesburg; Suncoast Casino in Durban; and the V&A Ampitheatre and The Barnyard Theatre in Willowbridge, Cape Town.

Take a look at our list of places to watch the games, from Boktowns to pubs and restaurants where you can really get into the swing of things and share in some of the Cup’s cameraderie.


SAB World of Beer

What better place to watch the game than at the SA World of Beer in Newtown. Be warned though, if the Springboks are playing, it’s going to get pretty noisy! Tickets cost R162 for adults and R100 for children (6-12 years). There’s also secure underground parking and a set menu for adults and kids. [A tour through the World of Beer is a great excursion for visitors to Johannesburg whether the RWC is on or not].

The Dros, The Baron, The Brazen Head and Hooters restaurants

These well-known chains of pubs and restaurants offer a great space to watch the game, connect with fellow rugby lovers and enjoy some great snacks and drinks.

If you buy a 500ml Castle Lager Draught, you’ll receive an entry card which allows you to enter a competition for a Castle Lager Rugby Supporter Hamper. (The draws take place at half-time every time SA plays).

Slug and Lettuce

Enjoy fine craft beer and great tapas at Slug and Lettuce. If you visit one of their venues on game days and buy a 500ml Castle Lager, you’ll get a scratch card which allows you to win instant prizes. There are branches in both Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Montecasino, outdoor piazza in Fourways

A great place for all-round entertainment and an official Boktown! SA team matches will be screened at the outdoor piazza and it gets pretty festive. There will also be live entertainment, activities for the kids, promotional giveaways and appearances from SA rugby legends, as well as great food and drink. The gates are open from 15:30 and it costs R30 per person, which includes a free beverage of a local beer, soft drink or mineral water.

Silverstar Casino in Muldersdrift

A fantastic entertainment venue and another official Boktown, with special screenings of the Springboks. Tickets, R30 per person, are available from Computicket or the Silverstar Box Office, and includes a free beverage, as well as entertainment for the whole family.

Gold Reef City, Johannesburg

Gold Reef City’s Theme Park Town Square will play host to an Absa Boktown throughout the Rugby World Cup and it’s definitely the place to be for lots of fun and entertainment. Tickets cost R30 and are available from Computicket or the Golf Reef City Box Office and include a free drink.

Emnotweni Casino, Nelspruit

All the South African rugby games will be screened at this upmarket casino in Nelspruit. Tickets are available from Computicket and cost R30 per person and include a free drink.

Suncoast Casino

Find all the Boktown action at the Suncoast Casino in sunny Durban. Tickets cost R30 per person and include free Castle Lager or soft drink, as well as a boerewors roll.

Golden Horse

The Barnyard Theatre

Tickets cost R20 and include entertainment for the whole family, live entertainment and promotional activities. You also get a chance to meet a SA rugby legend…

Garden Route Casino

Travelling along the beautiful Garden Route and don’t want to miss out on the rugby action? The good news is that there are some great prizes up for grabs if you watch any of the South African rugby matches at the Garden Route Casino.
