There’s nothing dull about this luxurious, award-winning establishment less than three hours’ drive from Johannesburg. Walkersons Hotel & Spa might seem tucked away from civilisation, but it’s precisely that seclusion that gives it its charm.
Located on the 800-ha Walkersons Private Estate, surrounded by hills and trout-filled dams, the Scottish country manor-inspired hotel offers 12 thatched Lakeside Suites and 11 Luxury Lakeside Suites. If you feel like splashing out, there’s also a Manor Suite with two bedrooms and bathrooms. A very romantic Honeymoon Suite is also an option and self-catering cottages are a great choice for families.
As a food-lover, I particularly relished the five-star dining experience created by Chef Adri van Wieringen. Highlights were the trio of trout, an assortment of trout and carpaccio set on a garden salad accompanied by horseradish cream and lemon wedges, and the Southern Seas Kingklip, served with a side of Marmite consommé, diced potatoes, pickled baby marrow and Shimeji mushrooms.
For the active visitor, the property’s beautiful and well-worth exploring by foot or on a bike, and you can spot zebra and antelope in the hills. There are 14 lakes and dams for fly-fishing enthusiasts, while the spa beckons after a day out. Dullstroom is a fun little town, with a main drag full of interesting shops, pubs and restaurants, or of course you could opt to just hang around Walkersons’ beautiful gardens and think about what’s for lunch!
You can wake up each morning to an exquisite blanket of mist and watch the sun rise, bringing the edges of the ponds into focus. Bliss!
