Increasing skill levels across all hospitality sectors is a major focus for the South African tourism industry. As a result, Tourvest Destination Management recently introduced its ‘TDM Guiding Academy’, which is aimed at improving the knowledge, skills and professionalism of tourist guides across the country.
There is no doubt that having a good tour guide can make or break a destination or a holiday experience, and there is a great need in South Africa for top quality guides who are passionate, knowledgeable and professional.
Tourvest will be going on a major recruitment drive and is working on a sustainability strategy for 2015 and beyond that is aimed at looking at current employment and training models and making these relevant to current trends and market needs.
Tourvest Destination Management chief marketing officer Felicity Vieira says, ‘As a business, we believe that the tourist guide is one of the most important components of any tour. By partnering with accredited training providers and external consultants and development gurus, Tourvest has established a training model that will improve tourist guiding throughout our business and ensure that our clients get charismatic, passionate, well-spoken and problem-solving experts that are in the business of making memories.’
