On 18 July, steak-lovers and restauranteurs sat down at Parktown North’s The Local Grill – 2016’s Steak Restaurant of the Year – for the 2017 Wolftrap Steakhouse Championships to feast on premium steak served by owner Steve Maresch and to celebrate restaurants that pride themselves on serving the best-grilled beef in the country.
This year Rare Grill in Kenilworth, Cape Town, was awarded the championship title from a selection of 150 impressive eateries. Rare Grill is the first winner from the Cape since the inception of the awards.
“For an intimate steakhouse like Rare Grill, such an accolade is really going to put us on the map!” owner Greg Bax said. In second place is Little Havana in Umhlanga Rocks, Durban, followed by The Local Grill.
In new categories introduced this year, Rare Grill also won the title of Newcomer of the Year and The Godfather in Centurion was awarded Steakhouse Legend of the Year, having been serving up steak for more 30 years. The Cattle Baron Group won Chain Steakhouse of the Year.
The process of selecting the top 10 finalists involved the public who voted by the thousands for their favourite steakhouse. The shortlisted finalists were then visited unannounced by expert judges. Points were awarded for the meal that came to the table, including the sides and sauces accompanying the steaks.
“The top 10 finalists, as voted by the public, were then visited unannounced in June by judges led by Pete Goffe-Wood, well-known MasterChef personality, and assessed according to a strict score sheet that focused on the steak on the plate, as well as the side dishes and the quality of the hospitality,” according to a statement by The Wolftrap Steakhouse Championships.
