South Africa’s finest chefs and restaurants were celebrated at the annual Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards which took place on 15 November 2015.

The event took the term ‘Sunday lunch’ to a different level altogether as guests tucked into the finest food and wine at the SunExhibits Centre at GrandWest in Cape Town, eagerly awaiting the announcement of the winners.

Not surprisingly, Luke Dale-Roberts’ The Test Kitchen took the Restaurant of the Year award (for the fourth consecutive time). Margot Janse’s The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Français walked away with the Service Excellence Award (for the second year in a row). Scot Kirton of La Colombe won the Eat Out S. Pellegrino Chef of the Year Award and the winner of the Lannice Snyman Lifetime Achievement Award was the late Liz McGrath.

While the list was dominated by the Western Cape restaurants, Gauteng made a solid showing with Five Hundred at The Saxon taking fifth spot and Restaurant Mosaic at The Orient holding down seventh place. Luke Dale-Roberts certainly had a good evening with The Test Kitchen walking away with the top accolade and The Pot Luck Club restaurant in Woodstock taking ninth position.

Judges included Eat Out Editor and Chief Judge Abigail Donnelly, award-winning chef Jackie Cameron, celebrity TV chef and writer Siba Mtongana, and MasterChef SA judge and superstar chef Benny Masekwameng.

Abigail Donnelly said the competition was tough and standards incredibly high. “It’s been a phenomenal judging season with seemingly endless opportunities to enjoy fantastic food. South African dining really is of a world-class quality – I am honoured and humbled to have experienced such excellence this year,” she said.
