Brandy gets a makeover

In the past, brandy was a bit of an old fogies’ drink, but things have changed and South African brandy is being rediscovered in new and innovative ways. Gone is the time when a ‘brandy and coke’ was the cocktail of the day…

South African brandy has certainly come of age and with the Fine Brandy Fusion Festival just around the corner, Johannesburg brandy lovers will get to taste the finest tipple the country has on offer. The event takes place from 5-9 June 2015 at the Sandton Convention Centre and promises to be jam-packed with brandy tastings, brand MasterClasses and brilliant musical entertainment (to drop the name of Lloyd Cele as a teaser). Enjoy the bespoke fashion demos, socialising (and tasting) at the Urban Brandy Cocktail Bar and get to know the brandy makers from Stellenbosch, Montagu, Calitzdorp and beyond.

For further inspiration, you can visit the website and get some great ideas for cocktails to try at home: there is the Fynbos (made with rooibos tea), the Oude Meester Franklin, the Skinny, the Collison’s Cosmo and, soon to be a Jozi favourite, the Ama-Lekker Licious.

In the lead-up to the Fine Brandy Fusion Festival, Sawubona TV attended a media lunch at Bistro Michel in Athol Oaklands to meet brandy master Christelle Reade-Jahn and to enjoy a brandy tasting. Chef Michel Morand carefully selected a menu to perfectly match the various brandies selected and a good time was had by all.
