Dining at the One&Only is a real pamper experience, from tea and scones or a Rose Mojito cocktail in the Vista bar and lounge, gourmet goodies in your suite, fabulous fine dining and the most sumptuous breakfast spread imaginable.

New to the fine dining calendar in Reuben’s, operated by the nations’ much loved chef Reuben Riffel, is a monthly four course tasting dinner event. This is not your normal run-of-the-mill food and wine pairing. Titled ‘Reuben Invites’, the series of dinners is a culinary collaboration between Reuben, a guest chef and a wine estate or craft brewery. This creates an all encompassing dining experience and a chance to meet and socialise with these talents.

I had the pleasure of attending the first in the series with Reuben, Pete Goffe-Wood of Masterchef fame, and local craft brewery Devil’s Peak. While spicy food and beers are a well accepted match, most of us would not associate beer and fine dining, but it works!

Successful food and wine/beer pairings fall into broadly two categories for me. The combination is either like a comforting hug that makes you feel warm and fuzzy, or it is startling and scintillating like a cheeky smack on the derrière.

Reuben and Pete Goffe-Wood achieved the culinary hugs masterfully with courses such as a light and creamy goats’ mousse paired with a Devil’s Peak Pale Ale and lightly spiced Goan fish curry paired with the Silvertree Saison. And the parting hug from decadent sticky toffee pudding with stout ice cream paired with a glorious liquorice Devil’s Peak Black IPA. The IPA – India Pale Ale – is only available at the brewery, so be sure to book a tour while visiting Cape Town.

The scintillating smack came from a superb lightly smoked steak tartare seasoned with tarragon mustard, complemented with a blue cheese and jalapeño sauce. Sweet and savoury touches from biltong shavings and tiny cubes of makaatan (local wild watermelon preserve) adds local flavour in a refined way. Paired with a Devil’s Peak American Pale Ale, this combination is surprising and exciting. I am very pleased that it is featured on the new restaurant menu as I will definitely be ordering it.
