Every now and again one stumbles across an absolute gem. The Mercer Hotel in the heart of Barcelona’s Gothic quarter is one that completely exceeds expectations – and stumble across it you will (literally!).
Hidden on a tiny, narrow, cobbled road, it’s built within the Barcino, the ancient Roman city and development of the hotel was only approved subject to the retention of the original Roman fortifications and mediaeval arches, dating back to 1AD. The result of Spanish architect Rafael Moneo’s work is a design that seamlessly brings together styles spanning several centuries.
The massive wooden doors, restored frescoes and seventh-century columns are complemented by light and airy rooms, as well as modern reception areas. Although it’s only 10 minutes away from the famous Las Ramblas shopping strip, it’s tempting to just stay put.
My favourite spots were under the orange trees on the patio for morning coffee, on the rooftop pool deck to appreciate Barcelona views at sundown and at Le Bouchon – a cosy tavern that offers delicious tapas and a devilish cocktail menu – for dinner.
The hotel also offers a range of special packages and experiences for their guests including a Romantic Experience, a Gourmet Experience or the option of a Different Experience, where you get to explore the city on a Vespa as part of a guided tour. Another great way to enjoy the city is via a walking tour.
When it comes to accommodation, there are a variety of options on offer to meet every budget including: Premier, Deluxe, Junior Suite, Premium Junior Suite and Suite. For both the leisure and business traveller, the Mercer Hotel in Barcelona is the perfect pit-stop in a wonderful city that will have everyone planning to come back for more.
Going hungry in Barcelona is not even a vague possibility. Enjoy a delectable seasonal menu at the The Mercer Restaurante (known for delicious seafood dishes); enjoy tapas and drinks at Le Bouchon – the combination of a bistro and neighbourhood bar; and the aforementioned terrace area and cocktail bar are both great places to enjoy a drink and catch up on the day.
