South Africa is home to the continent’s only commercial whisky distillery, the James Sedgwick Distillery in the Western Cape. The home of Three Ships Whisky and Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky, which have won international awards, the distillery is open to the public, who can experience the art behind beautifully crafted whisky on African shores.
Nestled in the picturesque Boland town of Wellington, an hour’s drive from Cape Town’s city centre, newbies and connoisseurs alike can indulge in a one-of-a-kind experience that includes tasting a few whiskies.
Tastings and tours are usually limited to 10 people, but during the festive season, 20 may do a tour. On arrival, enjoy a whisky cocktail followed by an on-foot tour to witness first hand how the drink is crafted through the various stages, from raw material to distillation to maturation. At the tasting room, you’ll be presented with Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky, Three Ships Bourbon Cask Finish, Three Ships 5 Year Old Premium Select and the Three Ships 10 Year Old Single Malt vintage 2005, all perfectly paired with five sample dishes to explore the various flavour combinations.
The carefully chosen sample dishes include plain and smoked apple chips, pulled beef with caramelised onions, blue cheese with fennel and celery, smoked snoek and green apple pâté, 70% dark chocolate mousse and a pumpkin pie.
The James Sedgwick Distillery was awarded Best Brand Innovator in Whisky Magazines’ 2011 Icons of Whisky, and went on to win the Best International Whisky Distillery title at the New York International Spirits Competition in 2015 – making your visit to the distillery well worth it.
