The winners of the 2015 Wellness Travel Awards (founded by Spafinder Wellness 365) announced last year included Bushmans Kloof Spa in the Western Cape (winner in the Country Awards category for SA) and Thalaspa Henri Chenot at Lion in the Sun in Malindi, Kenya (for Best Spa in Africa).

Founded in 2014 by Spafinder Wellness 365 the Wellness Travel Awards finalists were chosen by a panel of 33 industry experts and the winners were voted for by over 10 000 consumers and travel agents.“It is clear that health-conscious consumers are becoming more sophisticatedabout their wellness-related needs while traveling,” said Mia Kyricos, Chief Brand Officer of Spafinder Wellness. “Today, wellness travel reaches far beyond traditional spa experiences and the survey reveals a savvy new traveller: one that demands an extremely wide range of healthier experiences, from check-in to check-out.”

We took a closer look at these two African spas:

Bushmans Kloof Spa

Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat is situated at the foothills of the Cederberg Mountains on a South African Natural Heritage Site. The five-star retreat has everything a traveller could wish for: rolling plains, incredible rock formations, waterfalls, wildlife and five-star luxury. The Bushmans Kloof Spa “combines ancient wisdom with modern expertise, offering guests pause to revitalise the senses, re-align body and mind, and restore a harmonious balance”. The stunning Riverside Spa Gazebo, with its panoramic views, allows guests to be emmersed in nature to recharge body and mind. Their treatment menu is broad and varied.

Thalaspa Henri Chenot at Lion in the Sun

Thalaspa Henri Chenot at Lion in the Sun in Malindi, Kenya is set on the shores of the Indian Ocean with six treatment rooms, three sea-water hydrotherapy facilities and a hairdressing salon. It follows the tradition of Henri Chenot, which combines thalasso­therapy, Chinese massage, Western medicine and a bio-light diet, which is rich in fibre, fruits and vegetables and includes a high liquid intake, non-meat protein and cereals. The detoxification treatment, which is the most popular, includes a personalised bio-light diet and a combination of massage, mud, hydrotherapy and hydrojet treatments. Follow the spa on Facebook.

    Bushmans Kloof has long been on my bucket list. The setting is gorgeous!
