Female traveller found in possession of cocaine worth R1 998 000 at ORT

A SARS (South African Revenue Service) detector dog unit responded to the woman’s luggage in which several packages labelled “Brazilian coffee” were found. Upon closer inspection, the bags tested positive for cocaine.

She has been handed over to the police, SARS said.

In a separate incident, counterfeit goods and drugs with a combined value of over R10,29 million were seized at the airport on Saturday and Sunday, officials said.

Man caught with cocaine with estimated street value of R2 million at ORT

A man who allegedly attempted to smuggle 7kg of cocaine worth an estimated street value of R2 million through OR Tambo International Airport appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, said the Hawks.

Segundo Melendez Damacina (40) was arrested on Wednesday evening before he was able to board a flight to Maputo, Mozambique, said Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

He had arrived alone in the country from Sao Paulo, Brazil with the cocaine in his luggage, wrapped in tin foil inside coldrink containers.

He would remain in custody until his bail application next Thursday.
