Sit under an old oak tree on the lawns of Allée Bleue, a wine, fruit and herb estate in the Franschhoek Valley in the Western Cape. The Allée Bleue “chicnics” have become a tradition to look forward in the summer season.
Take in views of the lush vineyards as you enjoy your chicnic basket, packed with goodies from the farm itself. In the kiddies’ basket (R65 per child under 12): free-range chicken nuggets; homemade French fries; chocolate brownies; potato crisps; and fruit juice. In the standard picnic basket (R185 per adult): two glasses of Allée Bleue Starlette Blanc; homemade farm bread served with chunky farm jam, salsa verde, tomato, garlic and thyme chutney, onion and aniseed marmalade; Allée Bleue mixed leaf baby salad with grated parmesan cheese; wild rice salad with organic baby carrots, pickled onion, basil pesto and smoked feta; baby fennel, red onion and preserved citrus with hazelnut dressing; soy and sesame seed cured beef stir fry with egg noodles; salted chicken with coconut shavings, dried mango and coconut dressing; artisanal cheeses; homemade mini melktert; and fresh fruit.
Take a herb tour
Allée Bleue is ranked among the top three herb growers in the province. Herb production takes place in 31 hydroponic tunnels spread across 2,4ha and another 35 tunnels which are on other farms in the region. In season, an incredible one ton of herbs is harvested per week.
Every Friday there is a one-and-a-half-hour tour around the estate’s facilities. The range of herbs farmed includes dill, fennel, sage, tatsoi, parsley, French and garlic spring onions, mint, oregano, watercress and tarragon. Its biggest varieties are basil, coriander, rocket, thyme and rosemary. You’ll be able to taste some of these in your chicnic basket.
Allée Bleue Wine Estate is situated at the intersection of the R45 and R310. Book your basket before you arrive. There’s also a vegetarian basket available for R185 per adult. Live music is on offer on Sundays. Tel: +27 (0) 21 874 1021.
