StreetSmart SA has launched in Knysna to extend its work towards uplifting at-risk street children in South Africa. The non-profit organisation is rallying in Knysna to become involved in assisting to rebuild the lives of young people in the area.
Selected as the beneficiary for StreetSmart Knysna is Sinethemba – an organisation that works with at-risk children and their families by enhancing self-sufficiency through development programmes.
Funds are raised through a voluntary R5 donation to a table’s bill at participating restaurants. Since StreetSmart SA’s founding in 2005, under the patronage of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, the organisation has raised over R11,5 million for their cause.
“StreetSmart is one of the best examples of how a little donation can go a long way,” said Knysna hotelier and co-ordinator of the Knysna Committee of StreetSmart SA, Sue Mills. “It shows how those who enjoy a meal can with agreement of those who cook and serve, help people who are less fortunate than themselves, so that they too can become productive citizens of our country.”
There are currently 88 StreetSmart restaurants participating in this initiative, including the three that started the ball rolling in Knysna: Caroline’s at Belvidere Manor, Knysna Hollow Restaurant and the Bell Tavern at Belividere Manor. Chatters and Earth & Fire Restaurant also joined the cause at the time of StreetSmart Knysna’s launch.
