Any time of year is a good time to take a romantic break, whether it’s a mid-week mini holiday in the winelands or a weekend getaway in the bush far from the madding crowds. Our Sawubona writers put together a list of five value-for-money getaways in five of SA’s provinces.
The Last Word Constantia, WESTERN CAPE
At this intimate boutique hotel (it has only nine rooms), the little touches, attention to detail and exceptional service make for an intimate and discerning experience. Situated in the breathtaking Constantia valley, the rooms are beautifully furnished and the gardens well worth exploring. Enjoy a decadent breakfast and take advantage of the in-house chauffeur to discover what the surrounding area has to offer.
Miarestate Hotel & Spa, EASTERN CAPE
Secluded luxury at its finest, the property is situated high above 740ha of wildlife estate, with panoramic views of the sea and untamed bush. You’ll have private access to a small, secluded beach on the rocky shore of the Wild Coast and can choose from a deluxe hotel room to a rustic, self-catering log cabin. The spa caters for couples – and there are special packages for two on offer. Read Ingrid Wood’s review, A soulful sojourn, for further inspiration.
African Vineyard Guesthouse, NORTHERN CAPE
Heard of the Green Kalahari? This area of the Northern Cape is an oasis of lush green, in stark contrast to its desert surroundings. Less than 30km from Upington, you’ll find Kanoneiland (“Cannon Island”), a working grape farm alongside the Orange River. This jewel of a guesthouse offers country hospitality, an abundance of delicious farm food and cool respite from the heat in the leafy gardens.
Welgelegen Manor, MPUMALANGA
Less than an hour’s drive south-east of Jo’burg, in the heart of cosmos country, Welgelegen Manor is both luxurious and romantic. Originally built for industrialist Andries Mostert in 1912, sensitive renovation has retained the establishment’s Sir Herbert Baker-designed authenticity. Rooms feature English-style decor, with fireplaces, walk-in closets, white linen, underfloor heating and free-standing bathtubs. A theatre-style TV room, billiards room, croquet course, chess room, bar and pool deck make Welgelegen ideal for relaxation. The Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve is nearby and a travelling masseur is available on request.
Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge: KWAZULU-NATAL
This is a private bush lodge run by iSibindi Africa perched on the hills of the incredible Hluluwe iMfolozi Reserve. The region is rich in wildlife and guests can organise to visit the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World heritage, although the views are so glorious, we doubt you’ll want to leave the lodge.
