6 exceptional places to love in SA

1.Wake up to ocean views at Kenton-on-Sea

There’s not much to beat a weekend away in a quiet beach town – and Kenton-on-Sea offers just that. The beaches are pristine and the water’s cool, with rock pools full of interesting creatures. With plenty of accommodation available in this quaint town, be sure to opt for one with excellent views of the ocean. The Oyster Box Beach House is a great choice.

2.Taste your way through the Midlands Meander

Not only is the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands Meander absolutely stunning at any time of the year, it also plays host to a number of exquisite eateries, many of which offer on-site accommodation too. A personal favourite of mine is Hartford House (near Mooi River). With paddocks full of some of the country’s finest thoroughbred horses to greet you as you drive in, this vast estate has plenty to offer, from views to luxury accommodation. Their holiday menus are out of this world and have top-notch wine pairings to boot. Also well worth a visit are Granny Mouse’s Country House (in Balgowan) and Tumble Downs Café and Restaurant (just outside Howick).

3.Visit the seals off Hout Bay

Duiker Island off Hout Bay is renowned for its fantastic sightings of Cape Fur Seas. Various companies offer visitors boat rides to view the seals and some go a step further and include a snorkelling experience (Animal Ocean is a reputable one to try). While in the vicinity, a detour to Simon’s Town (about 40 mins away) will allow marine wildlife enthusiasts to enjoy the Boulder Beach penguins.

4.Admire Jo’burg’s skyline at night

The best way to see Joburg city is undoubtedly from a height after sundown. The lights draw the outlines of the buildings’ skyline and the city’s energy is palpable. Head to a rooftop venue for a cocktail (try the San Deck at Sandton Sun) and get your phone ready for a reel of unbeatable pics.

5.Enjoy a picnic in the Knysna Forest

The Garden Route in general is an excellent option for any traveller looking to plan their next road trip. Stopping over at the idyllic coastal towns including Plettenberg Bay and Wilderness are a no brainer, but the Knysna Forest is an often over-looked gem. SANPark’s new “Rooted in Time” self-drive allows visitors to get up close and personal with the fairytale-like forest. Spend a day exploring the area’s unique flora and pack a picnic to enjoy at one of the route’s sites.
