Pizza and wine pairings at Eikendal

Eikendal Pizza Pairing Vegetarian & None JUMBO

There are few things better than a cheesy pizza and a good glass of wine, and the good news for lovers of both is that Eikendal – a wine estate which is situated between Stellenbosch and Somerset West – has recently introduced a Pizza and Wine Pairing experience this summer.

A trio of bite-size pizzas will be on offer, each of which will be matched with one of the estate’s complementing wines. The pizzas are prepared by the team at Cucina di Giovanni restaurant and consist of either a meat or vegetarian option of trios. The restaurant is known for its Italian creations and crafts thin-based hugely flavoursome pizzas for guests to enjoy.

The meat option begins with a “zingy” chicken and pineapple pizza, paired with with the Eikendal Sauvignon Blanc 2015 – a new release. It’s followed by a ham and mushroom combo, matched the 2014 Janina – Eikendal’s unwooded Chardonnay.

Vegetarians are also catered for and the tasting begins with a peppers and pineapple pizza, partnered with the Eikendal Sauvignon Blanc 2015. Next comes a mushroom and olives combo, paired with the 2014 Janina Chardonnay.

Both options conclude with a brie and cranberry pizza combined with the Eikendal Merlot Rosé 2015, providing a light end to the tasting.

“Wine with pizza is like beer with fish and chips… it’s just meant to be,” says Nico Grobler, Eikendal winemaker. “With these summer taste sensations we invite visitors to come and linger a little longer in our tasting room. Or why not make a day of it and join a cool crowd on the lawn at the water’s edge?”

Each pairing has been carefully considered in order to provide guests with the best wine tasting experience possible. Younger family members are also considered with the estate’s specially-designed juice tasting.
