There’s something about holding a book, driving a classic car or enjoying a cup of freshly brewed coffee in an intimate, non-franchised establishment. An authentic experience of the latter, coupled with a fresh home-style deli menu, can be found at The Naked Kitchen & Coffee Bar, born of the passion for travel, food and fresh seasonal food co-founders Shaun Els and Victor Barbosa share.
A quick lunch date at the eatery in Morningside Shopping Centre, Johannesburg, soon proved that it may very well be Jozi’s best-kept hot coffee secret. The interior – created by Tristan du Plessis of Studio A – is reminiscent of an indie-Bed-Stuy café, with modern finishes against pops of black, emerald and brass for a Instagram-worthy visual feast. Expect a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for catching up with a friend (or some work), a business meeting or a small brunch get-together.
It’s best to arrive famished. Find a table and order a soon-to-be “my regular” Roast Hazelnut Latte, made with a special blend of Naked Coffee beans, which comes highly recommended by the friendly team – for good reason. While you wait, head over to the deli section headed by chef Sasha Simpson for a selection of breakfast, lunch and early dinner dishes. Take your pick of protein and scrumptious yet healthy sides from the daily menu. Interesting breakfast options include turmeric oats with ginger, apple, coconut, maple, chia, passion fruit, banana, dates and coconut cream and chilli scramble made with chilli flakes, Danish feta and sambal oelek oil. Finish it all off with a decadent, warm slice of the popular banana bread. To ease the guilt, gluten-free and vegetarian options are available for some of the menu options.
‘The word “naked” ties in perfectly with the establishment, as it represents the “raw” seasonal produce that is carefully considered and sourced. “These naked ingredients are passionately put together and cooked to perfection by a talented team of young chefs,” says easy-going yet passionate Barbosa.
Food-lovers can enjoy this fine coffee and deli experience seven days a week, from 7am-6pm. ‘Our vision is to create a brand of excellence that can stand out in any city across the globe. Johannesburg is just the beginning,’ says Barbosa.
