Myoga Restaurant

Myoga Restaurant - Mushroom (LR)

Truffle Chawanmushi (Japanese egg custard).

Could I have stumbled across the most comfortable restaurant in Cape Town? Perhaps ‘comfortable’ conjures images of slouchy couches and diner-style food, but Myoga is streets away from this. On the ‘plush’ side of comfortable, it offers roomy tables and poised armchairs. We were there on a rain-sogged mid-week evening and even though the restaurant was buzzing, we could still hold an easy conversation without having to shout above the noise. On the (dare I say it?) more romantic side of comfortable, the restaurant is nestled next to the beautiful Vineyard Hotel’s gardens, with gentle lighting and discreet waiters. If the weather is good, The Terrace is an excellent spot for a lavish lunch.

But what about the food? Award-winning chef Mike Bassett dishes up his spectacularly plated fusion fare from his open plan kitchen. While there are plenty of flavours from around the world, South African ingredients pop up numerous times in the menu. From the Boer Spiced Blackened Ostrich to the Butternut Stinging Nettle Naartjie Risotto, Bassett has cleverly referenced South African cuisine, without making it contrived. We’d recommend the All White Scallop (with macadamia-buttered root vegetable puree, refried white beans, horseradish cream and orange gastrique) to start and the classic Duck Breast (slow cooked leg, smoked sweet potato, carrot orange arancini and orange sauce) as a main. If you’re prepared to settle in for the evening, ask for the seven-course dinner tasting meal menu (R325 per head, check out the menu here).

Dessert? It has to be the Granny Smith. This favourite home-grown, tart apple is reimagined in multiple ways on one plate (cream apple cake, caramel crème pâtissière, roasted apple ice cream, apple gel, almond apple crumble).

With a vast wine list (and plenty of reasonably priced options), seasoned sommeliers on hand to guide you, and a unique East-Meets-West-Meets-South-Africa menu, this is a great place to expose visiting friends to some of the best food the Cape has to offer.

Myoga is at 60 Colinton Road, The Vineyard Hotel and Spa, Newlands, Cape Town. For reservations call: +27 21 657 4545 or mail:
