Man caught with cocaine with estimated street value of R2 million at ORT

A man who allegedly attempted to smuggle 7kg of cocaine worth an estimated street value of R2 million through OR Tambo International Airport appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, said the Hawks.

Segundo Melendez Damacina (40) was arrested on Wednesday evening before he was able to board a flight to Maputo, Mozambique, said Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

He had arrived alone in the country from Sao Paulo, Brazil with the cocaine in his luggage, wrapped in tin foil inside coldrink containers.

He would remain in custody until his bail application next Thursday.

“The Hawks are keeping drugs out of the airport. We are more vigilant now that more people are trying to smuggle drugs in. Our members are ready for them,” Netshiunda said.
