Italy may have inspired a food odyssey of good wine and delicious pasta and pizzas in Elizabeth Gilbert’s iconic book Eat, Pray, Love, and with good reason. Many travellers travel to the country to savour true Italian cuisine like the locals do, despite a struggling economy. Whats more, Italy’s been dubbed the healthiest country on Earth in the Bloomberg Global Health Index out of 163 countries.
The study looked at various factors such as mortality, life expectancy along with behavioural factors and health risks to come to a health score. Italians where found to be healthier than Americans, Britons and Canadians.
The report found that Singapore and Cyprus are the only countries outside of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development forum to rank in the top 20 healthiest countries, while Israel ranked the highest amount countries in the Middle East. Chile ranked as the healthiest country in Latin America and in Eastern Europe, Slovenia ranked the healthest.

The traditional Italian diet is largely made up of oils, red meats, starch and wine, with many dishes known to be revered for being simplistic in ingredient choice that creates flavoursome meals.
