Sea Point’s Main Road in Cape Town has long shrugged off the dodgy rep it had in the early Noughties, and has instead established itself as a foodie destinations in the Mother City. And if it’s a world-class breakfast and coffee you’re in search of over the weekend (or during a week day for that matter), this is where you want to be. While the food is a draw card (more of that later), it’s also the fact that you can take in a stroll along the Promenade to either earn your breakfast, or burn it off.
One of the favourites for nearly a year now has been Jarryds Espresso Bar and Eatery. Tucked into an atrium, it’s easy to miss from the street, but that would be a mistake! Inside tourists, local business people and moms fresh off the school run huddle around tables in breakfast banter. It’s the brainchild of Jarryd Segal, who was born in Cape Town, but moved to Sydney as a child. Here he fully absorbed the food and coffee culture, eventually opting to open up shop back in South Africa with his brother Ariel.
Jarryds is a refreshing alternative to some of the franchise eateries that have also flocked to the area. Bursting with energy, you’ll see the brothers bustling through the kitchen to check on food, greeting guests, serving coffee before it gets cold and chatting to locals – it’s not unusual to see the same faces here day after day. It’s this attention to detail that has ensured this breakfast hotspot has maintained its great reputation, ensuring that notoriously fickle Capetonians keep coming back.
Another highlight is that breakfast is served all day (none of this “till 10am rubbish!) And yes, there is also a choice of Banting-friendly bread on the menu and particularly tasty smoothies. Jarryd has ensured the menu is brimming with options, but each with a twist. For example, the toasted banana bread is served with espresso butter. A quinoa breakfast bowl is brought to life with sautéed kale, avo, basil pesto, mixed toasted nuts and a poached egg. If it’s just fruit you feel like, prepare yourself for a beautifully presented platter. Lunch, served from 12pm, serves up an equally broad range of light meal options.
Jarryds Espresso Bar and Eatery is situated at 90 Regent Rd, Cape Town.
