Guide on the go

IYP City Essentials App

Travel apps make trips away more mobile and less cumbersome, but the really good ones offer regularly updated advice on where to go with zero destination disappointment. Visitors to Johannesburg should download the free In Your Pocket City Essentials App (iOS and Android), which has just been added to this digi-guide of 40 cities in Europe and the Caribbean.

The app is fully functional offline, so it won’t eat up data each time you use it. Local publisher of Johannesburg In Your Pocket Laurice Taitz-Buntman explains that while Jo’burg’s a popular business travel and conferencing destination, it’s only recently begun positioning itself as a city for tourists. “Jo’burg is a tricky city to get to know, as most locals will tell you,” she says. “Johannesburg In Your Pocket is designed for both the mainstream traveller seeking the expected and the adventurous traveller dreaming of the unexpected.”

The app’s content will take visitors to the usual places everyone knows and loves, as well as off-the-beaten-track spots offering unique aspects and experiences of the city, adds Taitz-Buntman. “It directs you from Hyde Park’s newest five-star restaurant to Mayfair’s Palestinian sandwich shop and from the Mall of Rosebank, with its multitude of local and international high-street brands, to a bookshop downtown stocking more than one million collectable volumes, spread across an eight-storey building.”
