Florida coast braces itself for Hurricane Irma

Hurricane Irma has made landfall in the US state of Florida as a Category 4 storm. The Florida Keys on the southern tip of the state was hit first, with winds of about 200km/hour.

The storm is expected to remain powerful as it travels closer to the West Coast, which is now bracing itself for impact.

Irma should move inland and over the northern part of Florida on Monday, before hitting the state of Georgia.

Al Jazeera’s Andy Gallacher reports from Miami Beach.
