Whether you like it shaken, stirred or on the rocks, there’s nothing like your favourite drink prepared by the best bartender in South Africa (well, one of them anyway). Domenico De Lorenzo from Molecular Bars in Johannesburg has made it onto a very prestigious list of booze gurus who know that pouring the perfect drink really is an art form.
He will be representing SA at the 2015 Diageo Reserve World Class™ Bartender of the Year Global Competition after a gruelling preliminary round which saw 6 000 bartenders from more than 50 countries compete at local level.
Domenico, emerged as the champion for SA with his original drinks of the “Curious Case of the Malted Man” and “Lady in Red”. The Curious Case of the Malted Man is a hot cocktail made from fig and ginger tea, singleton of Dufftown, Lagavulin and vanilla. The Lady in Red drink is a mixture of beetroot puree, poached pear syrup, Ketel One and a splash of lemon. [See recipes below].
The finalists represent some of the world’s exceptional restaurants and bars so there’s no doubt that competition will be tough.
The finals will be taking at the City Hall in Cape Town on Friday, 4 September 2015. Cheers! (Watch this space).
