DJ Milkshake’s long walk for an important cause

The DJ Milkshake Foundation has launched an initiative to raise awareness about the hardships faced by many South African children who have to walk extremely long distances to school, often crossing dangerous rivers on the way.

“I’m very happy and excited to tell you about an initiative that I’ve started, which is a fundraising walk to raise awareness about a lot of the kids that walk to school every day in South Africa,” DJ Milkshake said in a video posted on Instagram.

“I’ll be embarking on a walk from my home in Diepkloof, Soweto to Thlabane in Rustenburg. It’s approximately 120km and I’ll be doing it to raise awareness and I’m proud to mention that this is an initiative by my foundation – the DJ Milkshake Foundation.

“Education has always had a special place in my heart, as well as [those of] my parents. They have always been advocates for access to good-quality education, especially for the rural child and many children walk barefoot for hours to get to school,” he said.

“The date of the 14th of June is symbolic to me as my mom passed away on this day in 2011 and I will be doing this walk in honour of her memory.”

He has been sharing his journey in snippet videos posted on his Instagram account.
