Registered as an arts town, the Cape’s Riebeek Kasteel is the first area in South Africa to be formally known for its collective talent in this field. And for visitors – and not just art hounds – that’s a real draw card.

Start your creative tour with a visit to RK Contemporary, a gallery space dedicated to monthly curated (solo or group) exhibitions. Artworks are available for purchase and many of the artists are locals. And it’s not just the works of provincial creatives or emerging artists that are on show. As curator Astrid McLeod explains: “Established artists are given a platform to show here in the Western Cape.” On view this month are ceramics and linocuts and the gallery also features sculptural pieces, with Anton Momberg’s marquette bronze sculptures particularly delight. Book now (ticket sales open from around 2 May) for the town’s annual art event, Solo Studios, which runs from 9-12 August. The event extends to the neighbouring town of Riebeek West and is a collaboration between artists, curators and galleries in the area. It’s a great opportunity to move beyond viewing art in traditional gallery spaces (although do visit The Gallery on 32 Main St, as there’s a wonderful variety of work on show), and rather see it in the artist’s studios instead – and you can purchase on-site. Most private and reclusive, the creatives invite art lovers and collectors into their personal space for a very cool experience. Visit: and

Have a truly creative experience and book into Astrid McLeod’s Bloemendal self-catering cottage. McLeod is the founder and curator of The Gallery and her cottage is packed with exciting, vivid artworks that compliment her beautifully appointed property. Bloemendal features two double bedrooms and two bathrooms (one en suite to the main bedroom) as well as an airy, open-plan living area. Outdoors on the verandah there’s a relaxed seating area with a fireplace (perfect for braais), dining area with views over the garden and a charming plunge pool. You won’t want to leave! Visit:
