Experiential destination travel is certainly one of the trends defining the industry right now and some properties are responding to this consumer demand exceptionally well.
One destination brand that ticks all the boxes – food, wine, art, shopping, design, aesthetics, authenticity and sustainability – is CAVALLI ESTATE. A “lifestyle destination brand”, the estate brings together all the elements of luxury travel in one glorious property on the R44 (Somerset West, Cape Town).
On entering the impressive gates, the slow drive up to the main building (which houses Equus Dine, Equus Gallery, Equus Boutique and the fabulous wine-tasting lounge) took me past winemaker Craig Barnard’s structured vineyards and the private stud farm, home to horses that look implausibly perfect.
Not only was lunch – enjoyed over views of the Helderberg mountains – mouth-watering (I’ve never tasted a cheesecake as good as Executive Chef Hylton Espey’s ginger-spiced version), but the building’s also set to be the first Green Star-rated restaurant and exhibition space in the country.
We paired the quality, but affordable Passions wine range portfolio (Black Beauty Shiraz, White Knight Chenin Blanc and the delectable Pink Pony Grenache Rosé) with our courses and then strolled through the underground art gallery and browsed through the boutique before reluctantly leaving.
Cavalli Estate deservedly scooped the 2014 Style Award at the Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards. We suspect it will be receiving many more awards in the years to come.
