The World Spa Awards took place earlier this month at InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort in Vietnam, honouring the finest spas and wellness establishments on the globe. These awards are the sister event to the World Travel Awards and are aimed at celebrating excellence in the wellness tourism industry. If you’re looking for a definitive list of the best spas on the planet, this is a good place to start.
Beautiful Thailand walked off with the award for World’s Best Spa Destination for 2015, which is no surprise – the Thai hospitality industry recognised the importance of wellness holidays long before it became a trend. Thailand’s beautiful spas, including the internationally-renowned Chiva-Som International Health Resort in Hua Hin (the worthy winner of Asia’s Best Wellness Spa category), lived up to their reputation as some of the best in the world. Aman Spa at Aman Tokyo in Japan won the title of Asia’s Best Hotel Spa.
World’s Best Wellness Spa 2015 was awarded to Forte Village Resort in Italy and World’s Best Countryside Hotel Spa 2015 also went to Italy – with The Spa at Fonteverde Tuscan Resort achieving the honour, but it was good to note that South Africa’s luxury Franschhoek Spa at La Residence was among the nominees.
Gaia Retreat & Spa in Australia won the World’s Best Day Spa category. Situated in the Byron Bay hinterland, this retreat offers a range of wonderful treatments and packages in gorgeous natural surroundings. World’s Best Eco Spa went to the Six Senses Spa at Con Dao in Vietnam and the World’s Best Hotel Spa went to Emirates Palace Spa in Abu Dhabi, the hotel is said to be 7-star and so is the spa offering. The Emirates Palace Spa also claimed the World’s Best Spa Signature Treatment award for their 24 Carat Gold Radiance Facial.
In the Africa category, Nomad African Spa in Windhoek was singled out as Africa’s Best Day Spa for 2015; Johannesburg’s The Saxon Spa and Studio at Saxon Hotel Villas and Spa took top honours and Thanda Spa at Thanda Private Game Reserve won the Africa’s Best Safari Spa category for 2015. While SA did pretty well at the awards, it was Morocco that was awarded the prized accolade of Africa’s Best Spa Destination.
Other top spas in Africa that received awards were Mvua African Rain Spa at Diamonds De La Gemma dell’Est (Tanzania’s Best Hotel Spa); Bush Spa at Singita Serengeti House (Tanzania’s Best Safari Spa); and The Royal Spa at The Royal Livingstone, which won Zambia’s Best Safari Spa for 2015. Egypt’s Best Hotel Spa for 2015 is Willow Stream Spa at Fairmont Nile City and the hotel in Morocco that walked off with the accolade is Mazagan Spa at Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort. In Senegal, The Spa at The Rhino Resort in Saly got top honours, a combination of Asia and Africa; and in Mozambique The Best Hotel Spa Award was given to Anantara Spa at Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort.
