Audi R8, what dreams are made of!

While not many people have the talent to be racing drivers, many fancy being a Lewis Hamilton and will go as far as “pushing” their everyday car to its limits when the highway is empty.

With these average motorists in mind, Audi’s created an ‘everyday’ sports car from their LeMans legend, the R8 LMS. The only catch, however, is that this special car will be produced in limited quantities and it’s only for those with deep pockets. Shortly after its release in 2007, almost 27 000 motorists gave the sporty R8 the nod by taking it home. When you see the R8, it’s not hard to understand the allure.

From the sporty design with side blades, carefully crafted to create drama and satisfy the need for speed, to the sumptuous interior that boasts the finest leathers, and most importantly, the performance – it’s all there in one beautiful package.

South African motoring journalists, Audi dealers and industry leaders recently had the experience of being “Lewis Hamilton” – or any of their favourite racing car drivers for that matter – when they donned the helmets and got behind the wheel of the new Audi R8 at the recently refurbished Kyalami Race Track in Midrand, Jo’burg.

For the experience, Audi brought out the range-topping V10 plus (449 kW/560 Nm), which accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in a mere 3,2 seconds and sprints from 0 to 200km/h in just 9,9 seconds. With a top speed of 330 km/h, it gives exhilaration a new meaning. Dubbed “the most powerful and fastest production Audi ever”, the car didn’t disappoint.

The magic intensified as soon as the 20-inch wheels made contact with the smooth, newly laid tarmac while the acoustics from the exhausts created a truly magnificent soundtrack.

Inside, the driver and passenger are surrounded by a luxurious interior. Despite being lightweight, the car remained stable as though held on the road by a magnetic force at high speeds and hugging the corners beautifully.

Motorists who are able to shell-out just under R3million to own the new R8, won’t just be buying a car, but also a lifestyle that will be envied by many.
