The holidays are approaching and we are starting to wonder what we will be doing every day to keep our family and children entertained. From a local heritage site and hot air ballooning to a fun family show, Flight Centre has compiled a list of activities for you to consider doing with your family.
1) Visit a local heritage site
The school holidays provide a great opportunity to expose your children to our rich diverse heritage at various important local sites. Maropeng at the Cradle of Humankind, Robben Island and the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, the Vredefort Dome in the Free State and Pilgrims Rest in Mpumulanga are a few must-see heritage sites for both young and old.
2) Hot air ballooning
There are numerous hot air ballooning providers and packages across the country, so depending on your location, you will be able to experience unparalleled views of anything from game and wildlife to magnificent mountains and waterfalls, all from the comfort of your basket high in the sky.
3) Go on a picnic
Pack a picnic basket and head out into the countryside or simply visit one of your local botanical gardens. The Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens in Johannesburg, Shongweni Nature Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal and Le Pique Nique at the Boschendal Wine Estate in Franschoek are some of our favourite places to picnic.
4) Visit a museum or art gallery
Taking an educational or cultural tour of one of these is a great way to pass the time and learn something new. Our top picks are the South African National Museum of Military History, the Apartheid Museum, the First South African Perfume Museum and the Wits Art Museum.
5) Zip-lining/ Canopy Tours
Whizzing through the treetops strapped to a zipline may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but zip-lining has grown in popularity over the past few years and a number of canopy and treetop tours are available across the country.
6) Catch a theatre show
Nothing keeps the kids occupied better than attending a live show. There are always a range of family-friendly shows on offer during the school holidays to suit all tastes and pockets. See what’s on show at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg or the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town, where stories are brought to life.
7) Go biking or swimming
Hitting the local outdoor bike park or trail is not only fun, but is also a good way of getting the kids exercising in the great outdoors. Local beaches or public pools offer loads of fun in the sun too.
8) Sign up for a cooking or arts and crafts course
From cooking to crocheting, kiddies courses are a great way to take their hobbies and interests to the next level.
9) Join a public library
Nothing beats browsing the shelves of one of the country’s many public libraries. This is ideal for keen readers who can spend hours scouring rows upon rows of books.
With so many fun things to do during the holidays, Flight Centre hopes you’ll make the most of the festive season!
