Toby Shapshak is not only the Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Stuff, a talented freelance writer and TED speaker, but something of a “master traveller,” thanks to his robust career that led to him being doned “the most high-profile technology journalist in the country” by GQ Magazine. Here are his trusted and go-to travel tips:
On what shoes to travel in:
Travel in running shoes as you’ll walk a lot in airports. Luckily, trainers are seen as cool. I take smart shoes in my bag but never walk long distances in them.
The carry-on bag essential:
Take a pair of shorts in your carry-on bag as airports get very hot, and lightweight tracksuit trousers for sleeping on overnight flights.
How to tune out the world:
Noise-cancelling headphones are essential.
Sawubona recommends the Sennheiser PXC-550.
How to never be strapped for cash:
Always carry some forex. You’ll never know when you need cash.
Making the most of your luggage allowance:
Use a lightweight suitcase, so half your cabin luggage allowance isn’t taken up by the bag itself.
Sawubona recommends the Samsonite Lite-Locked luggage.
On short trips, I only take carry-on luggage: a small hard-shell, lightweight suitcase and a compact backpack laptop bag.
