5 African summer destinations

If you’re planning a summer holiday in Africa, you’ll be spoilt for choice. From the plains of the Serengeti to the shores of Zanzibar, you can enjoy a safari expedition or a coastal oasis.

Here are five places to add to your summer getaway bucket list:

Zanzibar, Tanzania

While the weather remains pleasant throughout most of the year, a summer in Zanzibar offers hot, dry weather from December to March – perfect for lying on the beach, a quick dip in cool blue ocean waters or endless stargazing at night. As the sun sets, enjoy a stroll through Stone Town, a Unesco World Heritage Site which was once the epicentre of the spice and slave trade in the 19th century.

Kumasi, Ghana

Known as the cultural home of the Ashanti king, Kumasi is a cosmopolitan city with an array of activities and sights. Get lost in Kumasi Kejetia, a vibrant market, or wander through the former king’s residence, Asantehene’s Palace. Kumasi’s nightlife is as vibrant as the locals, with clubs blaring dance hall to pop music until the early hours.

Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

While it’s no surprise that the beaches of Mozambique made the list, Bazaruto Archipelago really stands out. The six islands off the coast of southern Mozambique offer pristine sand dunes and colourful coral reefs. Enjoy scuba diving, game fishing and romantic horse safaris on the beach.

Cape Town, South Africa

The Mother City offers a bit of everything for everyone. Take in Table Mountain’s majestic views of the city; sample world-class wines on the wine route; shop designer brands at the V&A Waterfront; or enjoy delicious cuisine at some of the best restaurants in the world with top chefs at the helm.

Lagos, Nigeria

Situated on the edge of the Lagos Lagoon and adjoining the Lagos Island, the city’s most affluent neighbourhood, Ikoyi, is host to several historical sights such as Freedom Park. And its nightlife is on par with the best in the world. Take a boat cruise on the Atlantic before enjoying live music in rooftop bars.
