Gallery: Ed Suter’s street lens

Cape Town-based photographer, Ed Suter is inspired by the streets of South Africa and the people who walk it. The colours, art and textures that set African cities apart form the base of much of his work. This inspiration emerged in book form when Sharp Sharp was published in 2012, paying homage to the streets of Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.

“I’m motivated by the word ‘energy’,” said Suter. “I want the work I do and the photographs I take to convey a sense of the energy of SA. It’s the energy one might pick up walking through a neighbourhood where the colours are bright, the fabrics bold, the characters are quirky and the light is just right.”

"Barbershop signs are a particular favourite of mine. I find this a classic: simple and direct, but with a surprise reflection in the sunglasses." Photo: Ed Suter
